CURRENT SITUATION: As of late 2025, Merlin’s Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) feature has become outdated and very limited.
💡
FEATURE REQUEST:
Merlin should update its OpenAI Key settings to fully support OpenAI-Compatible API Keys, which are now the industry standard for accessing AI models via BYOK.
This improvement would enable users to enter a 🔗 Base URL and an 🔑 API key to seamlessly select and use their OpenAI-Compatible Provider models.
Competitive Context:
Other AI assistants such as Sider and Harpa already offer generic OpenAI-Compatible API setup, including model configuration within the BYOK settings.ADVANTAGES :
- Users can quickly fetch, configure and switch BYOK models using a single key
- Merlin benefits from a less complex, more unified and reliable backend-frontend system using a standard json schema
- Adoption of the industry standard ensures future-proof interoperability and modularity of Merlin’s BYOK feature

Thanks for the suggestion! We are not working on this right now, but I’ve noted it and will definitely think about it for a future update.

I think they should consider adding other companies too

Jordan I see your point. Actually, generic OpenAI-Compatible API support would be a good foundation, allowing to use a vast number of AI Providers. Even Gemini API offers OpenAI compatibility https://ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs/openai
